Improving microphone pickup

Prev Next

Nureva audio conferencing systems offer several options for fine tuning the microphone pickup.  Review the problem descriptions below and apply the suggested solution. If the issue persists, contact Nureva technical support.

Quiet in-room participants

A common issue with audio conferencing is quiet meeting participants not being picked up in a room. Below are three practical steps to address this.

  1. Check the microphone clearance

    • If the microphone isn’t mounted according to our clearance requirements, it may appear to have a pickup issue.

    • Learn more about microphone clearance.

  2. Adjust the microphone gain setting

    • If there is proper microphone clearance, Nureva system's microphone gain setting.

    • Learn more about HDL310 microphone gain settings.

    • Learn more about HDL410 microphone gain settings.

  3. Consider using adaptive voice amplification

    • In some cases, using an external microphone with adaptive voice amplification may offer the solution.

    • Learn more about HDL310 adaptive voice amplification.

    • Learn more about HDL410 adaptive voice amplification.

Echo present during a conference

  1. Check the microphone clearance.

    • If the microphone isn’t mounted according to our clearance requirements, it may cause an echo.

    • Learn more about microphone clearance.

  2. Disable any audio enhancements at the operating system level.

    • Refer to the operating system's website for information on how to adjust audio enhancements.

Choppy or broken up speech

Noise reduction can have adverse effects if the amount of noise in a space is at or near the same acoustic level as a person speaking.

In the presence of moderate noise like an HVAC or other repetitive interference, try adjusting the Noise Reduction setting to low instead of high. This will enable the person speaking to be picked up a bit better but may also pickup more noise in the space.

If the choppy speech occurs only when using an external microphone, refer to the External Microphones section below.

Voices do not sound natural

Using the Nureva App, navigate to the microphone equalization settings found in the Microphone tab and try these adjustments for the following issues. A description of each adjustment follows:

  • Low: Sounds you feel, and what reinforces the voice and gives it strength. Too much makes the voice sound thick and muddy, too little and it will send hollow.

  • Mid: This is the main band for vocals, adjust this slider up or down to bring the voice forward or down if the voices are too pronounced.

  • High: The high band contains the details on the voice. If it sounds flat bring this up a bit, but if the voice is tinny, drop it down.

Here are some example settings. Note these are just starting points and you may need to make additional adjustments.

  • Muddy – Turn the low setting down by 4 points.

  • Tinny – Turn the high setting down by 4 points.

  • Hollow – Bring the Low up by +2 and the Mid up by +2.
